Exhaust Gas Temperature
The Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) gauge measures the temperature of exhaust gas leaving the engine. This is used by the pilot when adjusting the mixture (using the red knob on the throttle quadrant) for the desired mode of engine operation. There are various techniques that may be used to lean the engine (adjust the mixture). A typical technique is to reach cruise and then slowly reduce the mixture until the peak EGT is reached. Then the level is moved back toward the rich position until the EGT is 50 to 75 degrees lower than peak. Pilots call this "running 50 degrees rich of peak".
